The HSMP UK Visa no longer exists. As of April 6th, 2011, the UK Border agency announced that they would no longer be accepting applications for a Tier 1 Visa (previously known as a HSMP UK Visa). However, they also announced that they would still be accepting applications for Tier 1 extensions, meaning those that are residing in the UK currently via a Tier 1 Visa or a HSMP UK Visa can apply to stay for an extended period of time in the country.
What was the Tier 1 Visa / HSMP Visa?
The Tier 1 Visa was a points-based immigration service offered by the UK and was a service that allowed individuals with special, highly desirable and professional skills to reside legally in the UK without a secure job offer or sponsorship from a UK-based company or employer.
Who qualifies?
The UK Border agency encouraged doctors, scientists, engineers, MBAs and other very highly skilled individuals to apply for the Tier 1 Visa. Applications were strengthened when the applicant could speak the English language, possessed a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and could prove an above average income.
How do I apply for an extension?
If you are already residing and/or working in the UK with an in date Tier 1 / HSMP Visa you are able to apply for an extension, meaning your time in the UK is extended to a longer period.
In order to do this you must simply fill in the Free Tier 1 Extension Form. You will need your Visa details with you while you fill out the form, as it will request specific dates, reference numbers and details from the documents you were issued upon the acceptance of your Tier 1 / HSMP application.
You should ensure that you have plenty of time left on your current visa before you apply for an extension, as you need to make sure that you are still residing in the country legally while you wait for your extension application to be considered.
